Frequently Asked Questions

What types of themes work well for a Keepsake Clock?

The possibilities are endless, just think about how you can capture a photo where the subject is taller than it is wide. We have created beautiful clocks with photos of children and adults engaged in their favorite activities such as dance, cheerleading, playing musical instruments and sports of all kinds. Golf, tennis and fencing, as well as riding bicycles, motorcycles and horses are especially popular for adults. Almost any type of kids sports works well; football, baseball, basketball, diving and soccer seem to be the most common, but many others work well also. Almost any hobby can make an interesting clock; gardening, juggling, hiking, woodworking and even knitting. A wedding photo makes beautiful clock for an anniversary gift that will be cherished for years. And don’t forget about your four-legged companions. Action shots such as your pet playing with its favorite toy are adorable, but dog agility and horse jumping competitions provide a great opportunity for some exciting photos that make wonderful clocks. And of course, a photo of your human or animal loved one doing nothing other than looking into the camera is perfect too.

How do I include more than one person or animal?

Tightly group your subjects together to take your photo. Encourage people to put their arms around each other to get them closer and to give your photo a warm feeling. Do not line people up shoulder to shoulder, especially in the case of groups larger than two. Instead, position some individuals behind others, making sure that everyone’s faces are visible. You might have the people in front sit while those in back stand, or have everyone stand with the people in back on a small platform. Stairs work great for this last option. With animals, it’s a bit trickier. Just do your best to get their faces close together while keeping them all facing the camera.

Can I use more than one photo?

Yes, but we discourage it. The beauty of a Keepsake Clock is created by the repetition of elements within the photo. When more than one photo is used, this repetition is lost. That being said, we have created lovely clocks with more than one photo. In almost every case where more than one photo was used, the client arranged for a photo shoot to ensure that the images worked well together. Each photo was taken against the same background with the subjects wearing similar clothing. In addition, the lighting and the distance between the camera and the subject in each photo was kept relatively consistent. On the other hand, random photos taken at various locations, makes for a clock that is busy and confusing. Please remember that in cases where more than one photo is used to create a clock, an additional fee of $25 per photo is charged.

What is considered “extensive” photo editing?

Virtually every photograph requires a good deal of editing to turn it into a clock and this is work is done as part of the artistic process at no additional charge. Cases where that editing requires reworking major elements of the photo are considered “extensive” and may be subject to an additional charge. Work of this type is extremely time consuming and requires a great deal of skill and careful attention to detail. While there is no simple way to draw a firm dividing line between standard and extensive, we encounter the need to do extensive editing to correct cluttered &/or unbalanced backgrounds more frequently than with other issues. Please refer to the following images elsewhere on this site to see cases where the additional fee for extensive editing would apply:

  1. 3rd image - From Photo to Clock (ballerina)
  2. 1st image in 5th set - Selecting the Best Photo for Your Clock (woman in sunglasses)
  3. 1st image in 7th set - Selecting the Best Photo for Your Clock (Siberian Husky clock)
  4. 2nd image – From Photo to Clock (dachshunds) This example shows extensive editing required to move the subjects closer together and to change the shape of their bodies in order to make them fit properly within the confines of a clock segment.

If the photo you provide needs this type of editing, we will contact you to discuss options before beginning work on your clock. Pricing is dependent upon the amount of work required and generally runs between $25 and $50.

How will my clock arrive?

We use FedEx Ground service for domestic shipments. Standard packaging is a shipping carton with sufficient cushioning materials to ensure your clock safely. Please order a gift box only if needed, so we can all cut down on waste and protect our environment. If you choose this option, your clock will be placed inside the gift box with additional padding material and tissue paper. The hands are set to 12:00 and secured in place with additional padding material. Carefully slide this padding material from the hands and use the dial on the back of the clock mechanism to set the correct time. Install the AA battery and your clock is ready to hang.

What materials are used to make Keepsake Clocks?

We use only the highest quality materials when creating your Keepsake Clock. Your image is printed on beautifully textured, high grade canvas which is made specifically for the printers we use. The texture can be seen and felt, yet it is subtle enough so as not to distort your image. Our professional grade wide format printers utilize twelve pigment ink cartridges to provide a full range of beautiful true-to-life color that will remain fade resistant and color fast. The clock mechanism runs on one AA battery (not included) and has a built-in hanger so your Keepsake Clock can easily be hung anywhere. The mechanisms have a 10 year (12” & 16” clocks) or 6 year (20” & 28” clocks) warranty against manufacturer defects.

Can I get the hands in other colors besides black?

Standard black hands will be used in most cases. When appropriate, hands can be painted in various colors to coordinate with your clock. We will discuss the options with you prior to completing your project.

How do I change the time on my clock?

Use the small round dial located on the back of the clock mechanism. Do not change the time by turning the hour or minute hands as this may cause them to become loosened or misaligned.

Where should I hang my clock?

As with any other piece of fine artwork, hang your clock where it will not be exposed to excess moisture or harsh direct sunlight. Avoid locations such as bathrooms, laundry rooms or the working area of kitchens.

How do I keep my clock clean?

As with any other piece of fine artwork, your clock should be dusted regularly. We recommend a feather or microfiber duster, as opposed to a cleaning cloth. Try not to disturb the hour or minute hands as you dust. Do not spray your clock with any liquid or aerosol cleaners.

How should I store my clock?

Because of the large size of our clocks, we recommend that you keep the original box in case you ever need to store your clock for an extended period of time. Place your clock face up in the box and store it flat in a cool dry location, such as a closet.

How can I carry Keepsake Clocks at my retail store?

We are happy to offer our clocks to the public through appropriate retailers. Please email JoAnn@NotForgottenArts.com with your contact information so we can discuss the details.
